The annual Autumn Event, this year a quiz, took place on Friday 10th October from 7 pm for 7:30 pm at Chester Road Sports and Social Club, Kidderminster, hosted by President Norman Broadfield with help from past President John Hall.
As has become customary in recent years, the President's Autumn Event took the form of a quiz. This was set, not by Norman, our President, but by immediate Past President John Hall, and an excellent quiz it was to boot. Teams received written questions on a round-by-round basis, and then John read them out clarifying any, and there weren't many, queries. John was assisted by my sister Janet Taylor. At the end of each round, teams exchanged answer sheets, which were marked and handed in. My sister kept a running score.
Six teams, with membership from four to seven, took part. At half time, Simple Minds were well clear with 44 out of a total of 51, but the battle for second place was tight, with Foreign Correspondents on 36, One Wheel on 35, Presidents of Vice on 34, and Cabin Crew on 32. Crackpots were also enjoying the evening! At the end of the night, the final score was even more decisive. Simple Minds romped home with 99 out of 111, followed by Foreign Correspondents 85, One Wheel 78, Presidents of Vice 74, Cabin Crew 68, and Crackpots with memories of excellent fish and chips! Well done, Pete, as always, for organising the food!
Foreign Correspondents majored on Sport, Nature and Science; One Wheel on Flags; while the winners cleared the board on History, TV and Movies, Flags (equal with One Wheel), Food and Drink, Geography, Pop Music, General Knowledge and Technology.
The interval quiz prize, which was identifying adverts, was shared by Simple Minds, One Wheel and Cabin Crew with 17/20. (Your correspondent couldn't even identify the advert for the drink that he was consuming, even though it was on his glass!)
Then, the main event of the evening took place – drawing the raffle! There were loads of prizes, but also loads of re-draws! 'Put it back – I’ve won one already' echoed round the room as certain attendees' tickets kept on being drawn. I'll swear all mine came out. Eventually, after what seemed an age, the final prize was won, and an enjoyable evening came to a conclusion and with it the final social event of Norman's year. Congratulations, Norman, on being such a brilliant President!
