The annual Summer Event, this year a barbecue, took place on Saturday 21st June from 6:30 pm for 7 pm in the Rose Garden, King Charles I School, hosted by President Norman Broadfield.

2025 Summer Event (barbecue)

'Bangers a Smash!'

Smashing large, juicy pork, and pork and tomato sausages, chunky chicken pieces, succulent steak slices and beefy burgers, all skilfully cooked by master chefs Arthur and Peter, were available, accompanied by plentiful and various salads, all provided by Committee members and their families and friends.  A vast array of superb desserts followed.  From your reporter's point of view, the only shame was that a further, say, twenty to enjoy these delights would have been welcome!

The weather was about as perfect as it could be, so those attending had a really good evening.  Owing to circumstances beyond the control of the chefs, food was a bit late being served, and we ran out of raffle tickets!  The raffle was well supplied with prizes by the Committee, however.

In his penultimate social event of the year, Norman thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the evening a success and those attending who, he was confident, had thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  The background music, a mixture of big band tunes and popular songs of that era, was well received and was at just the correct volume.  Enjoyable, but not overpowering!

'Nothing could be finer than to have your barbecue in the Rose Garden Diner!  When you take your President up to the bar, then you know that a glass of red is not very far, pourin' the Moselle in, got to keep him rollin'.  Whoa, whoa, Chattanooga, there you are!'  (This is a misquotation from 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra!)

All those attending went home replete and happy.  Well done, the organisers!
