The annual Summer Event, this year a barbecue, took place on Saturday 10th July from 6:30 pm for 7 pm at Kidderminster Carolians Rugby Club, hosted by President John Atkinson.
A number somewhat in excess of sixty members and friends gathered for the President's Summer Event, which took the form of a barbecue.
The weather wasn't particularly good, but the only people to get wet were Tony Kidd, Peter Picken and Keith Weston, who, during the afternoon, got soaked putting up the gazebos that kept everyone else dry! The event had a number of unique features this year.
Ken Garbett, who has provided the salads for most Association events over the past few years, was unable to continue doing so, and members of the Committee and their spouses rallied round and provided a magnificent spread of interesting salads that accompanied the chicken breasts, pork chops, beefburgers, tomato sausages, and pork and leek sausages that were cooked by Martin Humphries and Peter Picken on the Association's own new charcoal-fired barbecue, and which were served by Olive Broadfield and Heather Humphries.
President John Atkinson brought along the coconut shy that he had spent the afternoon tending at Bayton Village Fête. Several members tried to demonstrate their skill with a view to taking the odd coconut home at the end of the evening. It has to be said that they did take a bit of shifting and there was the odd suggestion that they'd been glued into position. Only one or two direct hits with something approaching an Exocet missile were enough to hit the target. Most of the people taking them home had paid a nominal sum for the privilege!
Afterwards, guests retired to the Club bar, where Headmaster Alan Brooks sat alongside President John Atkinson and his wife, and the Association's first female Committee Member, Davina Bason, and her husband.
Also present were the proposed Vice-President David 'Daz' Slater and his wife, Paula, alongside Mr and Mrs Peter 'Porky' Vaughan.
It turned out to be an excellent evening again, and our warmest thanks were expressed to all the catering staff and their servants.
